The NAVC launched Embrace, a grassroots advocacy initiative, at VMX in 2020 with the goal of educating veterinary professionals on the importance of using their voices to effect change at the national, state, and local levels. The initiative connects animal healthcare professionals with legislation that impacts pets and the people who love and care for them.
Grassroots advocacy starts with citizens using their voices to influence public policy, which plays a role in many of the day-to-day activities of veterinary professionals. It is crucial that legislators are making informed decisions when introducing and voting on laws that impact animal health. NAVC Embrace keeps advocates informed on current legislation through many channels, including VetFolio Voice podcast episodes, the NAVC’s Better Care Weekly email newsletter, and online at navc.com/embrace.
Embrace zeroes in on issues that are important to the profession and the pet community, such as the human–animal bond, student loan assistance, and new veterinary colleges. It also watches out for changes in licensing or taxes and fees and then engages with advocates so they can use their voice to support or oppose associated legislation.

“Getting involved may seem overwhelming, but it’s really as easy as signing a petition, emailing a member of congress, or making a phone call,” says Danna Miller, senior director of communication and advocacy at the NAVC. “It’s about using your voice to make a difference, and leaning on your background and knowledge in veterinary medicine to do so.”
NAVC Embrace makes it easy to use your voice for good. You can visit navc.com/embrace to sign up to receive advocacy updates, find your elected officials, and connect with your local lawmakers and let them know you can be a resource when it comes to issues impacting animal health. Your voice matters! Together, we can make a difference for the health of animals around the world.
