Dr. PlattĀ runs a veterinary neurology consultancy service in addition to co-directing the teleneurology service of Vetoracle, a telemedicine company, and serving as medical director for Hallmarq Advanced Imaging.
Dr. Platt was a professor of neurology and neurosurgery at University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine until June 2022. HisĀ ongoing research interests include ischemic disease of the central nervous system, canine brain tumors, and epilepsy.
Dr. Platt is a member of the International Veterinary Epilepsy Task Force and a founding memberĀ and presidentĀ of the Southeastern Veterinary Neurology Group. He is past president of the ACVIM (Neurology) and was a chief examiner for the ECVN. He has authored or coauthored more thanĀ 220Ā journal articles andĀ 60 book chapters and is the co-editor of three textbooks: BSAVA Manual of Canine and Feline Neurology, Manual of Small Animal Neurological Emergencies, and Canine and Feline Epilepsy: Diagnosis and Management.
Dr. Platt received his veterinary degree from the University of Edinburgh (Scotland), completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Ontario Veterinary College (University of Guelph), and completed a residency in neurology and neurosurgery at the University of Florida.Ā He was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of veterinary Surgery based upon meritorious contributions to the profession.

The earliest references to diabetes date back to ancient Egypt, where it was described in the Ebers Papyrus as a new disease characterized by weight loss, persistent hunger, frequent urination, and intense thirst. It wasnāt until 1921 that insulin was discovered by Frederick Banting and Charles Best, which revolutionized diabetes treatment.
Initial insulins were derived from bovine or porcine pancreas, which were crude and impure. Because these insulins differ from human insulin by 2 or 3 amino acids, they provoke immune reactions such as insulin allergy, immune-mediated lipoatrophy at injection sites, antibody-mediated insulin resistance, and unpredictable fluctuations in blood sugar levels.
Over the past century, significant progress has been made in insulin use in both human and veterinary medicine, and the care gap continues to narrow. The most promising innovations in human diabetes management include smart insulins and glucose-responsive drugs. Imagine managing canine diabetes without constant hypoglycemia monitoring.
